We have had a look at the groundings in the approach channel again; there was another one last autumn - only a six metre boat but it looked from images to be off the centre line of the approach. It's not all that clear but the UKHO chart 2566-3 shows a DRYING height of 0.6 metres in the middle of outer harbour approach. Do be careful given our previous information about the effects on the tide height in varying pressure systems.

Super nice and helpful staff. Had an excellent meal at Grace's. Rail links working well for leaving boat and returning.
Kafiga landings/Victoria Harbour
Written by Bryant | 6th Apr 2022
"The Victoria harbour at Hartlepool is a harbour with busy commercial traffic.
This traffic is controlled by Tees VTS on channel 14.
Kafiga Landings in the Victoria harbour is a private mooring with no space or facility for unauthorised visitors.
Kafiga Landings is controlled by the Kafiga Landings Association."

UPDATE SPRING 2021
Written by Don Thomson 3 | 5th May 2021
I reviewed these notes in May2021. There have been no further reports of grounding in the approaches here. We have confirmed the absence of a waiting pontoon and there are no intentions of replacing it. Prices have gone up.

There is no waiting pontoon outside the lock, just 2 piles where a pontoon may once have been

Update Spring 2019
Written by Don Thomson 3 | 16th Apr 2019
I reviewed these notes in April 2019, replaced the charts and changed the prices. The discussion reference the depth in the channel to the lock was interesting; the harbour master runs in and out of here with a 2.1m draft and is sometimes short on time for race starts. He "adjusts" the tide height with pressure and wind direction and says it can vary as much as half a metre either way. This means that LW is+or - that given in the tide tables. You need to go in on a rising tide and adjust your time accordingly

Depth in the approach 2017
Written by Don Thomson | 11th Jun 2017
We have had another report of less than CD depth in the approach channel - from a yachtsman who had been told by the harbour that there would be sufficient. He was aground in the middle of the channel for four hours. Do not be mislead by the Navionics white "dredged Channel" indication on their chart. To be absolutely sure of the depth in the approach you might follow the advice given in 2016 and assume that the channel may only be CD + 0.8m

UP DATE MARCH 2017
Written by Don Thomson | 30th Mar 2017
These notes were reviewed by Don in March 2017. We queried the depth in the approach channel (raised by Nick Kelly below) and the marina said it was probably high pressure at the time. I've added a warning to the main text re depth. I've added a larger scale chart to show the Tees approach Buoy which has replaced the Tees Fairway Buoy. Prices are being held for another year.

Far less depth than described in approach channel.
Written by Nick Kelly | 1st May 2016
There is now far less depth than advertised in the approach channel. It is certainly not dredged to CD. I would estimate it is currently sitting at CD + 0.8m. This makes access for yachts [even a lift keel like ours more like H+or - 3, nothing like the H+or_5 that the pilot and the marina publish.

Update 2015
Written by dononshytalk | 10th Mar 2015
These notes were reviewed by Don in March 2015. The speed limit is 4knots in the Marina. Prices have gone down!! They may go up a wee bit in April 2015 but we'll check on that.
Update 2013
Written by dononshytalk | 9th Apr 2013
These notes were reviewed by Don T on the 9th April 2013. No changes were necessary other than to update the tariffs for 2013. Rumours of a marina development in the Middlesbrough Middlehaven Docks have come to nought
Best pub in Hartlepool
Written by Captain Pete | 9th Sep 2010
The Real Ale Aficionado MUST visit the “Rat Race, a tiny pub without a bar on Hartlepool station. It used to be an old waiting room and Pete runs it as a permanent beer festival. You knock on the door of a large cupboard and Pete comes and serves you wonderful ale. Absolutely No lager. Beers available are chalked on the wall with a list of those settling. It was always busy when we were there 10th & 11th August 2010 and everyone talked to everyone, a good place.
