2024 update
Written by Orwellian | 15th Jun 2024
The outer harbour is very well managed by a friendly and helpful staff. The prices are reasonable (for this area!), the showers and toilets are accessible 24 hrs via the harbour masters office and are very clean and modern. The fancy electronic sensor controls take a bit of getting used to! The facilities on the Cove side are not as good and have to be accessed with a fob (£15 refundable deposit for each one!) and accessed via an area with rough sleepers. The best pub we found (after extensive research) was the Red Lion in the street behind the Cove. The Sailing Club is also very friendly and welcoming to visiting sailors.

Weymouth last week

Diesel Andy (Quayside Fuel) now has a smaller lorry (carrying his maximum of a thousand litres of fuel) and will come to the marina car park to fill cans. If you can get to the fishing boat pontoon on the corner above the bridge he can get a hose to the boat.
Marina staff friendly and helpful as ever but no longer on duty all night. If you arrive after 1800 phone Portland Marina instead they will tell you, in the nicest possible way, where to go.
Heads and showers still excellent. Marlborough fission chips still good. Asda still a bit of a trek.

Fission chips

Sadly, as of last week The Old Harbour fish and chippery recommended below is no longer in favour. I think it's changed hands and no longer does fish fried in breadcrumbs (my choice) or, apparently, friendly service. And they had no haddock. We repaired instead to the Marlborough across the road who succeeded on all the above. Allegiance transferred.
UPDATE SPRING 2021
Written by Don Thomson 3 | 19th Apr 2021
I reviewed these notes in April 2021. Many thanks to Tyro for his notes. There is now shore power on the Cove pontoon. Note that this marina and the Portland one is now run by Boatfolk who have acquired them and the Quay Marinas organisation.
Portland Race

It's dangerous. As mentioned above it's probably the most hazardous bit of water in the Channel.
But AS LONG AS YOU TIME IT CORRECTLY you can safely use the Inner Passage, within a cable or so of the Bill. Do the sums, then check them, then do them again. And if you're new to it ask the Harbourmaster as well. He'll be happy to help. Tradition has it that one should round the Bill near enough to toss a biscuit ashore, but I should say that's a touch too close. And keep well to seaward of the whole lot in a southerly wind.
More info, based on several visits, most recently twice in 2019.

The entrance is sometimes hard to spot against the busy background of the town, but once you've got either of the towers it all falls into place. The leading lights are useful at night.
If you're tied up in The Cove it's a bit of a trek to the HM's office for the loos - especially if the bridge happens to be open at the time. There's a friendly and well-stocked chandlery a couple of streets to the south.
The best fish-and-chippery is not the one close to the waiting pontoon, but The Old Harbour in St Edmund Street, a little way north of the bridge. As well as the supermarkets mentioned above there's a monster Asda just west of the marina. Otherwise lots of ice cream, high street shops and a large and popular beach with sand so good for sandcastles that a competition is held annually. Or was, before the current unpleasantness.
UPDATE SPRING 2018

Only the prices for the marina have changed
Update Spring 2016
Written by dononshytalk | 13th May 2016
These notes were reviewed by Don in May 2016. Nothing major has changed; prices are up and I'v altered the notes; the Harbour webcam is no longer available but I'v found a link to another one. The Harbour has changed its main website address and web site layout and finally there is a page on their website with a downloadable pdf file giving a chartlet of the harbour; it's the same as the one we have in our gallery but a lot clearer.

Update March 2014
Written by dononshytalk | 25th Mar 2014
These notes were reviewed March 2014. Weymouth and the Marina have both frozen their prices for 2014 and the harbour now has shore power on virtually all their visitor pontoons.
Update 2013
Written by dononshytalk | 11th Feb 2013
The Weymouth harbour notes were updated by Don T on the 11th February 2013. There is a discrepancy between the Admiralty chart and the description of available pontoons given by the harbour which is due to the seasonal nature of the pontoons (E winds during the winter tend to make wreckage of pontoons nearer the harbour entrance so they remove them) Prices have been updated for 2013.
